Pinay Scandal of OFW's at OFWs.Net

Pinay Scandal, Filipina, Pinay, Filipina Scandal, Pilipina . . .

The real pinay scandal is the trafficking, prostitution and abuse of Filipino women and children.

As you may have guessed, many of these sexually exploited women are actually OFWs that slip through the cracks.

The following statistics will show to you what I am talking about.

1.) TRAFFICKING OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The July 2, 1998 issue of the Daily Star reveals that there are 150,000 Filipina women have been trafficked into prostitution in Japan. Some of these women were allegedly sold to the Yakuza for $2,400.00 to $ 18,000.00 each. The Manila Chronicle, May 31, 1995 issue reports that 150 Filipinas were sold into prostitution to night club operators in African countries, particularly Nigeria. These women were bought for $5,000 each by international syndicates.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Philippines reports that 492 of 3,776 reported cases of child abuse involves pornography, prostitution, paedophilia and trafficking. From 1991 to 1996 there were 8,335 cases of child abuse from 1991-1996, 96% of the victims were females.

2.) PROSTITUTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The August 18, 1998 issue of the Kyodo News revealed that a study shows that in the Philippines there are about 75,000 children who were forced into prostitution due to poverty.

The February 25, 1998 issue of TODAY reports that there are 400,000 women in prostitution in 1998. This excludes unregistered, seasonal prostitutes, overseas entertainers and victims of external trafficking. One fourth of them are children. Each year 3,266 more children are forced into the sex industry.

A intensive study by Sol F. Juvida entitled “Philippines - Children: Scourge of Child Prostitution” reveals some hair raising statistics. According to the study, the Philippines is fourth among 9 nations with the most children in prostitution, with 60,000 - 100,000. The same study reports that in Angeles City alone 75% of the estimated 500 prostitutes in the “Area,” a ghetto known for child prostitution in Angeles City are children. In 1984, there were 7 provinces with child sex rings. Today, they are present in 37 provinces.

According to the November 21, 1997 issue of the Indian Express, the Philippines is one of the favored destinations of pedophile sex tourists from Europe and the United States.

The October 12, 1997 issue of InterPress Service tells the shocking story of a 13 year old girl named Sharon who was kidnapped and sold as a virgin for US$30. In a brothel, she was raped by 8 to 15 men every night, even when she had her menstrual period or was sick with fever. By the time she escaped with a customer’s help she had sex with more than 1,500 men.

The sad thing about this is that there is “no evidence” that children in prostitution can ever rehabilitate. This traumatic experience will be borne by them forever in life. EPCAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) coordinator Ron O’Grady says that “Few children rescued from brothels have been able to begin living anything like a healthy life again. “

In an international conference Ron O’Grady says ”The ultimate solution to the problem lies in changing human attitudes and human values” Not only is the real pinay scandal the continuation of all of these horrific activities. The ultimate pinay scandal is the failure of society to change their attitudes towards these problems and to do something about it.

3.) THE HIDDEN PINAY SCANDAL OF OFWs

One f the areas you rarely hear spoken of is the Hidden Pinay Scandal. A common example is the Pinay recruited to be a maid or house helper.

One I spoke with was deployed in Singapore. Upon arrival the employer confiscated the Pinay's Passport and other important papers, in effect making her a prisoner in the employers apartment. Ofter these women are threatened or simply raped and become the property and play thing of the employer for her contract term.

Many a Pinay has just kept quiet and suffered through the years in order not to bring sham on her parents and family back home.

Again, we believe there needs to be an established way that OFWs may break their contract to protect themselves and escape such cruel conditions as these.
